Sepia Officinalis – Cuttlefish Ink
Sepia has a strong affinity for the female reproductive organs, pelvic area, hormonal system, liver, and venous circulation, with bearing-down sensations, hormonal imbalances, and exhaustion from over caregiving or stress.
Like the animal remedies for depletion, the Sepia individual feels worn out, indifferent or averse to family duties, irritable yet exhausted, with a sallow yellowish complexion and a “dragged down” sensation; they may crave vinegar or acids, feel better from vigorous exercise or open air despite fatigue.
Physically there may be pelvic prolapse or heaviness as if everything will protrude, irregular scanty or profuse menses, hot flushes of menopause, constipation with ineffectual urging, or migraines with nausea. Think of Sepia for hormonal mood swings with indifference to loved ones, PMS irritability, menopausal symptoms, vaginal dryness, or fatigue from motherhood or overwork.
Hormonal imbalances, menopause, PMS
Bearing-down pelvic sensations, prolapse
Indifference, irritability, exhaustion
Venous stasis, sallow complexion
Better for: vigorous exercise, open air, cold bathing, pressure, crossing legs. Worse for: morning, standing, before menses, heat, warm room, fasting, milk, washing.
