Rhus Toxicodendron – Poison Ivy
Rhus-tox. has a strong affinity for skin, joints, mucous membranes, and muscles, especially with restlessness, stiffness better from motion, and eruptions or pains from exposure to cold damp or overexertion.
Like the plant remedies for exposure and irritation, the Rhus-tox. individual is restless, anxious, and fearful, with a chilly constitution yet needing movement to ease stiffness; they may feel worse from initial motion but better continuing. There is a tendency toward overdoing it, leading to sprains, eczema, or flu-like symptoms, often with great thirst for cold drinks.
Physically there may be red, itchy, vesicular eruptions with burning or stinging, joint pains worse at rest or first motion, or stiffness like “rusty hinge”; fevers with chills. Think of Rhus-tox. for poison ivy/oak rashes, sprained ankles better walking, backache from lifting, or flu with body aches and restlessness.
