When I sat down with Roger Savage for this episode of Homeopathy Hangout, I knew we were in for a rich conversation. Roger brings over 40 years of homeopathic experience to the table, and yet here he is, enthusiastically championing a prescribing method that, by his own admission, initially made his hair stand on end. That kind of open-mindedness is something I deeply admire, and it is exactly what I want to talk about today.
The method in question is Homeopathic Detox Therapy, also called Human Chemistry, developed by Dutch homeopath Ton Janssen. I have been using it in my own clinic for over two years and the results have been extraordinary. It is a big part of why my books filled up so quickly and why I now have a team of homeopaths working alongside me. So having Roger on the show to unpack it further was a real treat.
Roger’s story begins in childhood, when persistent earaches and tonsillitis sent his parents looking beyond conventional medicine. A local homeopath helped where the GP had run out of options, and those early experiences planted a seed. It was not until university, though, that homeopathy truly took hold. A fellow student who had studied in India took Roger’s case and recommended Silica. The effect was striking: Roger, who had grown accustomed to sleeping until mid-morning, was up for breakfast the very next day after a single dose of Silica 1M.
He later traced a stubborn eruption on his knuckles to Thuja after reading the Boericke Materia Medica, and dealt with a poorly managed HeparSulf prescription from another practitioner by taking a single high-potency dose on his own intuition and experiencing a dramatic, clear release. These vivid personal experiences shaped his understanding of how powerful and precise homeopathic prescribing needs to be.
After years of English teaching and a detour through radionics, Roger trained at Misha Norland’s School of Homeopathy and built a classical homeopathic practice from there. It was only much later that Ton Janssen’s work crossed his path.
Roger had heard of a Dutch homeopath named Tina Smits and a method called CEASE therapy. He was not entirely satisfied with that approach. When Tina Smits became ill and Ton Janssen took over the teaching, Roger received Ton’s book, Fighting Fire with Fire. His first reaction was bewilderment: “What is this man doing? What on earth is he up to?” But curiosity won out. He met Ton in person, spent a day with him, and quickly saw the clinical logic. He began hosting Ton’s seminars in England, eventually helped move them to London, and when lockdowns arrived, pushed for the transition to webinars so the teaching could reach practitioners worldwide.
As Roger puts it, one of Ton Janssen’s core statements shifted his thinking: “The practice of homeopathy should be about clear clinical results.” That focus on measurable, physical outcomes was something classical training had not always emphasised in quite the same way.
In classical homeopathy, we talk about obstacles to cure: the maintaining causes that prevent a well-chosen remedy from doing its job. Roger gave a simple personal example of living in a damp room that caused wheezing, which resolved the moment the room dried out. The dampness was the obstacle, not a deeper constitutional issue.
Ton Janssen’s method takes this concept much further for modern patients. Roger described how today’s clients often carry what Ton calls a “hierarchy of toxins,” built up over a lifetime through medication, vaccination, environmental chemicals, pesticides, and even emotional experiences before and during birth. These layers can block even the most carefully chosen classical remedy from working.
The timeline Ton uses asks clients to recount their story from conception onward: the circumstances of conception, the pregnancy, the birth, the first year of life including what the breastfeeding mother was exposed to, childhood vaccinations, and every significant medical or chemical exposure since. This thorough picture allows the practitioner to identify what is truly standing in the way of healing.
Importantly, Roger emphasised that Ton’s method does not work through the popular “layers of the onion” approach of starting with the most recent issue and working backwards. Instead, remedies are ordered according to how deeply each toxic influence has penetrated the system. Treating several layers together, using ascending potencies over a course of weeks, tends to avoid aggravations entirely or keeps them very minor.
Roger shared a striking case to illustrate the method’s potential. A woman with very high lead levels in her blood had tried other removal methods without success and had actually developed an allergy to those treatments. Ton Janssen traced the source to a significant history of metal dental fillings. He gave her potencies of the filling material and of lead itself over a course of treatment, combined later with immune-supporting supplements. Her blood lead reading dropped from 12, to around 7 or 8 after the first course, and eventually down to 0.1 or 0.2. A blood test confirmed the result, and the patient was, as Roger described her in a recent webinar, “extremely well and full of vigour and smiling.”
I shared some of my own results with Roger during our conversation. I have had clients spend hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars on naturopathic parasite protocols over many months, only to find the parasites still present on follow-up stool tests. Using Homeopathic Detox Therapy, I have seen parasites such as Dientamoeba and Blastocystis clear within eight to twelve weeks, confirmed by stool testing, without any herbal protocols required. I have also helped clear systemic Candida in both adults and children without requiring the notoriously strict Candida diet, which most clients struggle to maintain.
One of the most fascinating areas Roger opened up was Ton Janssen’s approach to addiction and the neurotransmitter remedies that support it. Addiction in Ton’s framework is not limited to substances. It extends to gaming, social media, technology, and even the identity some people build around their illness. As Roger described it, some people belong to communities centred on their diagnosis to the point where the illness becomes who they are, and that habituated state functions like an addiction.
Among the remedies Ton uses in this space is GHB (gamma hydroxybutyrate), given in potency to help people loosen their identification with a particular state of being. Roger mentioned another remedy made from GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid), which he described as “the Buddha in us.” When GABA is deficient, there is fear, pain, fatigue, impatience, and sleeplessness. When it is restored through the potentised remedy, people experience a sense of peace and balance. Dopamine in potency addresses fatigue and low mood without the artificial euphoria of too much dopamine stimulation. Acetylcholine supports concentration and learning. Serotonin, when deficient, brings depression, fear, and sleeplessness; when balanced, it restores harmony.
Roger also mentioned Hypothalamus and Pineal Gland as remedies Ton uses, particularly in cases involving disrupted sleep cycles and overexposure to electronic light and electromagnetic fields. This came up in our discussion of children addicted to gaming: a twelve-year-old whose parents had removed all devices, triggering rage and aggression, was mentioned as a case one of my team members is currently working on using GHB in potency.
Something Roger said that I think is important for any homeopath reading this: Homeopathic Detox Therapy is not a replacement for classical homeopathy. It is a preparation for it. As Roger explained, once Ton has cleared a person’s toxic load and restored balance, “he is a classical homeopath,” because the patient then presents with clear, uncomplicated pictures that respond beautifully to a single well-chosen remedy.
Classical homeopathy remains the most elegant approach when it works. A child with a sore head after a sunny day may need nothing more than a dose of Natrium Muriaticum. A boy who has shut his hand in a car door can walk out holding the key after a dose of Hypericum 1M, as Roger witnessed firsthand. These acute prescriptions are swift, clean, and powerful, and they remain central to practice.
The Human Chemistry method simply provides the tools to unlock cases where the elegant classical approach has, to everyone’s frustration, not yet found the door.
Roger was clear that remedies are not a substitute for a reasonable lifestyle. Ton Janssen always emphasises that patients need to look at their diet, their sleep, their relationship with technology, and their daily movement. Roger mentioned Ton’s recommendation to walk at least an hour a day. He also raised the issue of electro-smog, sharing his own experience of developing early signs of blood abnormalities that his GP found normalised within a month of removing a heating pad that was functioning like a microwave near his body.
The point is not that technology is harmful in itself. Roger and I both agreed on that. It is the overexposure, particularly keeping devices close to the body and especially near the head during sleep, that creates problems. Earthing, spending time with feet on actual ground, helps discharge excess electromagnetic energy. As Roger put it, I am quite literally earthing my children by having them play on the farm all weekend.
If you are a homeopath interested in learning this method, Roger and Ton Janssen run ongoing training webinars for practitioners worldwide. You can reach Roger through his website at rogerhomeopathy.com. The webinar format means that wherever you are in the world, you can join the training community.
If you are a patient wondering whether this approach might help you, reach out to a practitioner trained in the method. The timeline process is thorough, but it is exactly that thoroughness that makes it so effective for people who have tried other approaches without lasting results.
I am so grateful to Roger for joining me on the show. His openness to a method that initially challenged everything he had been taught is a reminder that the most important quality any practitioner can have is the willingness to keep learning.
